Filmmaker • Storyteller • Creative Director
Joanna (Amara) Alexander is a London-based filmmaker of Trinidadian heritage whose work brings intimate Black British histories into the public record through film, archive and storytelling.
With a BA in Graphic Design and a Master’s in Filmmaking, she combines visual precision with a strong documentary sensibility rooted in memory, migration and identity. She is the founder of Amara Productions UK and Director of James Alexander Heritage Arts CIC, through which she develops creative and heritage-led projects that honour the lives, legacies and cultural contributions of African and Caribbean diaspora communities.
Her documentary The Homemaker, created in tribute to her late father James Alexander, has been recognised by major cultural institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of the Home and Redbridge Museum. The film was shortlisted for Online Best of the Fest at the Caribbean Windrush Film Festival 2023, and Joanna was featured as a filmmaker on BBC Radio London’s Eddie Nestor Show during Black History Month 2023.
Through her filmmaking, Joanna creates work that connects personal history to wider conversations on housing, belonging and cultural memory.
