”An aspiring black female director who is transforming black representation in the TV and Film industry by promoting authentic Afro Caribbean art and culture on the screen”

Greetings! I'm Joanna Alexander, (known as Alexander Amara) the creative force behind Amara Productions, an independent Production Company hailing from the picturesque landscapes of England, UK. As the sole member of my family born on British soil, I take immense pride in my rich, multicultural heritage.
Born in the transformative year of 1968, I spent the better part of my professional life veering away from my artistic inclinations. However, in 2015, a new chapter unfolded when I embarked on a journey into the world of artistry. Enrolling in the Graphic Design program at the University of East London reignited my passion, eventually leading me to discover my true calling in the realms of photography and filmmaking. My dedication culminated in graduation in 2018, but my academic journey was only beginning as I pursued my lifelong dream of becoming a documentary and docu-drama film director.
My unwavering devotion lies in shedding light on untold narratives spanning the diaspora and the African continent. A crowning achievement of this pursuit was my inaugural documentary, "Go Back & Get It," filmed in the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria in 2018. It chronicles my personal odyssey as I embarked on a quest to reconnect with my African roots. This heartfelt work garnered recognition in the form of the prestigious Going Global Award from the University of East London in 2018. In tandem with the documentary, I also crafted a series of poignant photographs and printed materials that added depth to the narrative, all in a tireless endeavor to reconnect with my African heritage.
Beyond this impactful debut, my latest work, "The Homemaker," has been handpicked for inclusion in the esteemed 2023 Caribbean Windrush Festival. This autobiographical masterpiece delves into the poignant tale of homelessness in 1960s England while celebrating the indomitable legacy of the first black man to establish a housing association in the United Kingdom.
My filmography stands as a testament to my unwavering dedication to storytelling through the lens of a camera:
• 2017: Human
• 2018: Go Back & Get It
• 2018: In Search of My Father’s Blue Plaque
• 2019: Death is Nothing at All
• 2019: Love Is
• 2019: Only Temporary
• 2019: The Homemaker
Through my work, I continue to illuminate the narratives that define our shared human experience, forging a path that bridges cultures and generations. Welcome to my world of visual storytelling.
