The Homemaker is the story of James Alexander the first Black Caribbean man to establish a housing association in 1969 in the UK. This autobiographical Windrush documentary explores how an immigrant from Trinidad navigated the social-political environment to house hundreds of West Indian, and Irish families including single mothers during a time when vulnerable people suffered from poor housing all over the country.
The documentary aims to introduce the story of James Alexander to a new audience raising further awareness of how Black immigrants from the Caribbean influenced and shaped the Britain we know today. Proudly narrated by his daughter and director Joanna Alexander, the documentary explores the importance of recognition as a source of pride for the Caribbean and Irish people in the communities he served and to somehow commemorate James for his work. Indeed, how did this man achieve so much in the UK during those socially difficult times; and still prevalent in society today.
